Colmworth Garden

This garden is designed for a couple who moved from London into a stable block conversion in the village of Colmworth, just outside Bedford.

The design of the garden is based on a contemporary feel with straight lines working away from the house, in order to increase the vista down the garden. A large natural stone terrace area is complemented with a black metal powder-coated pergola, over which a wisteria will be trained using a canopy of galvanised marine crosswires.

A raised pool has been added adjacent to the terrace to bring the sound and movement of water to the garden. You can journey around the garden using the 10mm gravel chipping pathway which takes you to the productive garden at the rear of the space, where raised vegetable planters constructed from plained oak sleepers are discovered.

Planting buxus sempervirens cubes creates evergreen structure around the garden, while the rest of the palette took inspiration from soft traditional planting and includes penstemon ‘Garnet’, nepeta ‘Walkers Low’, alchemilla mollis and geranium ‘Rozanne’ to name but a few. The lawn area to the middle of the garden creates a feel of space while complementing the large planting beds.
